The Ming Dynasty was ruled by emperors that disliked the intervention of intellectuals, however many educated men still wanted to take part in the government. For the most part the Taizu abolished chancellors meaning that most turned to secretaries or slaves to do the paperwork. One way that educated individuals found a way to get into government was to take the civil service examinations in order to become officials to the emporer and advice him (only 2 to 10 percent passed).
