School Culture
Education was required citizens 6-15 though parents had to pay for the books, materials, uniforms, etc. Chinese children all got a primary and middle school education. Each class had about 35 students. Parents were also required to pay for high school and in rural areas most would stop their education at age 15. Those with higher skill levels would continue on to advanced courses to learn how to write and study essays. To most families education was an honor and a pathway to wealth and power so many invested in tutors to teach the children.
